The purpose of this contract was to develop and complete UXO clearance and risk reduction activities across a parcel of privately owned land, that was once within the former Sussex Military Camp. In the early 1960’s the 61.7-acre impact area was divested to its expropriated owner and has been used for agriculture ever since. In 2021 the landowners discovered a mortar on the property and a subsequent UXO risk assessment by the DND rated the area as “high risk”.

A geophysical survey was completed on all accessible lands using MRS’s EM360 technology. In the northern portion of the project area, a pair of high voltage powerlines induced significant interference in the geophysical data making target identification virtually impossible without additional treatment. Using the EM360 technology and a high-powered transmitter, a technique was devised which essentially utilized all the recorded time gates to “weed out” real anomalous responses from the erratic interference of the powerlines.

Following the survey, UXO clearance investigation efforts on selected targets revealed several impact areas and suspect “ranges” on the property. A large amount of munitions scrap was removed and 54 UXO were successfully demolished using shaped charges under the guidance of a licensed NB blaster.
